daily life is inevitable.
The news was first published in china. The ‘Indian gazette’ published in 1774 was the first printed newspaper of this sub-continent. The first Bengali newspaper was the ‘Samachar Darpan’. There are many kinds of newspapers. They are dailies, weeklies, monthlies etc. The daily newspaper contains the news of daily affairs of the home and abroad. So the daily newspaper is popular to all sections of people. The other papers publish stories, poems, essays etc.

Moreover, newspaper plays a significant role in raising the morale of the people and enhancing the patriotic feelings of the countrymen. For example, during the liberation war of Bangladesh, some newspapers consistently encouraged the freedom fighters in their struggle for independence.

Govt. notifications are circulated through it. Besides, news of local
communities, railway timings, new laws and projects etc. are also given
publicity through newspaper. Newspaper is the chief source of publishing both
the social and commercial advertisements.
Newspaper has a great educative value too. It is the cheapest means of mass education. Students read newspapers to supplement the education that they receive at schools and colleges. By reading newspaper we can learn about the knowledge of modern science and technology, games and sports, trade and commerce, plans and programmes, culture and literature and what not.
Newspaper contains letters to the editor, news on current political situation, social development, importance of mass education, national crisis, economy, healthcare, crime and detection etc. and helps to form public awareness. Unbiased news on political condition makes the citizens conscious about their rights and responsibilities which are the key features for the exercise of true democracy.
Newspaper is an important means of recreation. It concentrates on sports, media, life style, fashion etc. and thereby entertain us. It also serves as a good companion in our solitary hours or in a journey.
Newspaper contains news on trade and commerce, technology, foreign affairs etc. Thus it helps to promote national economy and helps the Govt. to settle foreign policies with other States. It also contains separate corners for children and women.
Newspaper has some demerits too. Sometimes it publishes false or partisan news. It excites public feelings.
In spite of its demerits newspaper is the most useful thing in modern life. We cannot think of a day without it. The more we read newspaper, the more we can acquire knowledge. It is a looking glass of modern world. So we should read newspaper regularly.
