A Devastating fire, taking 30 lives

Khandakar, Dhaka, Mohakhali, 15 October : A devastating fire broke out in Jahan
Garment Factory at Mohakhali in the city of Dhaka on 14 October. At least 30
people were killed and over 50 injured. The death toll may rise.
The
fire broke out at about 9:00 pm. It is anticipated that the fire might have
originated from an electric short circuit at the “Finishing Section” on the
second floor of the building.
Smoke
engulfed the whole 10 storey building as a result of which people inside the
building could not come out of it in spite of their best efforts. The local
people and some workers of the factory rushed to the spot but failed to bring
the fire under control.
Kamal
Hossain, a neighbor of the factory said, “We were in our house. All on a sudden
we saw the fire at the 2nd floor first and then it spread rapidly.”
The
Fire Brigade and Civil Defense rushed to the spot immediately to extinguish the
fire. The Bangladesh Army, the Bangladesh Air Force also sent their personnel
and helicopters to rescue the people.
Rahima,
a worker of the garment said, “We saw the fire and wanted to come out but the
supervisor locked us.” As the fire spread rapidly, panicked workers were trying
to escape. But the only exit was locked, the sources claimed. The wounded were
admitted into the nearest hospital and different clinics of the city. The
causes of the accident were not ascertained.
A
cas was filed in Gulshan Police Station in this connection. The government has
formed a five member investigation committee to find out the cause of the fire.
