The Hare and The Tortoise
Or, Slow but Steady Wins the Race
Or, Pride Goes Before a Fall
Or, Perseverance Begets Success
There lived a hare and tortoise in the same jungle. The hare used to taunt the tortoise for its slow pace. One day he challenged the tortoise in a race. The tortoise accepted the challenge. A date was fixed for the race. The fox was the umpire. They started running. In a moment the hare went ahead of the tortoise. The tortoise was moving very slowly with his heavy shell on his back.
The hare stopped half way and looked
back. “Ha, Ha!” laughed the hare, “You are creeping (হামাগুঁড়ি/ধীরে
চলা)
on far behind. Speed up, lest I should be half over the country before you
reach the end of the battle.” The tortoise said nothing. He toiled and toiled. “I
may easily take a short nap (তন্দ্রা/একটু ঘুমাইয়া লওয়া)
and then overtake him,” the hare said to himself. The tortoise was moving
slowly with his little feet. He came creeping up the place. The hare awoke and
looked forward and saw the tortoise ahead. He sprang (লাফাইয়া
উঠা/ঝাপ দেওয়া) up and attempted (কোন কাজের উদ্যোগ
নেওয়া)
to start like wind. But from the end of the field the tortoise replied, “Hare,
Hare, I have won the race.”
