Comedy - Literary Terms
Comedy is any literary work especially a play, which deals with humorous, familiar events and the behaviour of ordinary people, speaking the language of ordinary people, less exalted and less serious than a tragedy, commonly having a happy ending. Its purpose is to amuse, and the treatment of character has touches of exaggeration and caricature. It also aims at correcting the follies and frivolities of the individuals of a particular society through laughter and ridicule. Aristophanes, Shakespeare, Ben Jonson and Bernard Shaw are among the best known comedy writers.
Comedies are of Various types: romantic comedy, comedy of humours, comedy of manners, Restoration comedy, tragic-comedy, burlesque, farce, black comedy, high comedy, low comedy, comedy of ideas etc.
