Morality play - Literary Terms
Morality play is a medieval dramatic form which allegorically - presents an ideal Christian life on the stage. In a Morality play, the hero, who represents all mankind, is surrounded by personifications of virtues, vices, angels, demons, and death, all the forces of good and evil, who battle for the possession of the hero's soul.
The most notable example of Morality play is Every man in which when the title character is summoned by death, he finds that of all his companions — Fellowship, Goods, Kindred, Beauty, Strength, and Good Deeds- only Good Deeds, though weak from his neglect, will accompany him on his journey toward judgment. Other well-known Morality plays include The Castle of Perseverance and Mankind.
