Village Fair
The Village fair is a large gathering place for men, women and children. It is an annual affair. A village fair is a place where the villagers meet to buy and sell things. The village people gather here to sell and buy local products. It is a great attraction to the children.
A village fair generally sits by the side of a big road, or in the bank of a river or central part of the village or in the yard of a temple or at the market place. It is generally held in the beginning day of Baisak or death anniversary of holy man or on the occasion of a religious festival. It lasts a day or two or more days together.
A village fair is a kind of exhibition . Many kinds of people bring their hand made articles for sell and display. The shop–keepers sit in rows. Clothes , toys, cheap ornaments , cheap fancy goods, cosmetics utensils, bamboo made articles, sweetmeats and many other attractive things are sold in the village fair. Every body buys things after his own choice.
There are some attractions of a village fair. The main attractions are Merry-go-rounds circus, doll dance, magic show etc. However the largest crowd gathers in the jatra pandal.
The usefulness of a village fair are many. It encourages cottage industries , artisans, craftsmen, potters, weavers, and cultivators. It also gives enjoyment to the simple villagers. It services as a vast medium of advertisement for the goods of cottage industries , artisans , craftsmen , potters , weavers, and cultivators.
A village fair has some demerits. It has no proper sanitation. As a result cholera, diarhoea, dysentery etc breaks out here and there. Gambling parties are often seen in a village fair. Sometimes children are lost and it is great anxiety for the parents. It is a noisy and unhealthy place. The pickpockets and criminals gather there.
A village fair gives us much joys and pleasures. It is a source of recreation. It gives us relief from our monotony life. It is special branch of our culture. So there should be held more fairs for the prosperity of our culture.
