Rivers of Bangladesh
Introduction: Bangladesh is a land of rivers. Most of the rivers of our country have risen from the Himalayes and fallen into the Bay of Bengal. Some of the rivers are big and some are small. The big rivers are the Meghna, the Padma, the Jamuna, the Karnafully etc. The small rivers are Buriganga, the Sitalakhya , the Gomoti, the Surma, the Titas etc.
Role of rivers on economy: The rivers of Bangladesh play an important role in the economy of the country. Bangladesh is an agricultural country. Her agriculture mainly depends on these rivers. The rivers carry enough silt (পলি) and make the soil fertile (উর্বর). So, jute, paddy, wheat (গম) and other valuable crops grow in plenty (প্রচুর পরিমানে) . The rivers serve as good water-ways . The river also helps us in trade and commerce .
Role as a source of wealth: Our rivers are a great source (উৎস) of wealth (সম্পদ). They provide (সরবরাহ করা) us fish. A large bulk (বিশাল) of fish comes from these rivers. Many people earn their living by catching fish in the rivers.
Influence of rivers on our life: The rivers greatly influence our life in many ways. The people of Bangladesh love the rivers. Most of the rural (গ্রাম্য) songs such as Shari (সারি), Bhatiali (ভাটিয়ালী) and Murshidi (মুর্শিদি) are the expressions (প্রকাশভঙ্গি) of the people’s love for the rivers. Much of our joys and sorrows depend on the rivers.
Role as a source of power: Our rivers also the great source of power and electricity (বিদ্যুৎ). Some of the rivers are used to producing electricity.
Demerits: The rivers are not free from demerits . Sometimes they overflow (উপচে পড়া/প্লাবিত হওয়া) their banks and cause floods. The floods very often bring us untold (অবর্ননীয়) miseries (দুর্দশা) and misfortunes (মন্দভাগ্য).
Conclusion: The rivers of Bangladesh do more good than harm (ক্ষতি). They are the source of our existence (অস্তিত্ব) and prosperity (সমৃদ্ধি). If there are no rivers in Bangladesh, Bangladesh would have become a desert (মরুভূমি). So, rivers are the blessing (আশির্বাদ) of Bangladesh.
