Village Market
A village market is a place where the villagers meet to buy and sell things. It is a buying and selling centre for the villagers. Every big village in Bangladesh has got a village market. It is an important place for villagers. It saves time for the villagers. Generally it sits every morning. Besides, big markets sit once or twice a week.
A village market generally stands at a place where people can easily come for buying and selling things. So it usually stands at the junction of roads or by the side of a river or a canal. Large banyan trees are let grown to give shade and shelter.
There are two kinds of village market. They are daily market and weekly market. Daily market is called ‘bazar. It sits daily in the morning. Weekly market is called ‘hat’. It sits once or twice a week in the evening.
A village market has three parts like open space, temporary shed and permanent shed. In the open space the sellers sit in rows. Fish, milk, fruits, betel leaves, vegetables, etc. are sold here. In the temporary sheds oil, rice, salt, pepper etc. are sold. Some grocers, tailors, doctors, potters etc. sit in the permanent shed. On the hat days one or two cows and goats are butchered . People buy meat from there. People can also have hens, ducks, fowl etc.
The village market is very useful to the villagers. Here they get all things of daily use. It saves the villagers from going to distant places to buy things. It is the meeting place of the villagers. They get news from home and abroad here. The post man delivers letters here. It functions as an important seat of trade and commerce. It services as a vast medium of advertisement for the goods of cottage industries , artisans, craftsmen , potters , weavers, and cultivators. In short, the villagers find a social and friendly life here.
Village market has some demerits too. The village markets are always noisy. Haggling is a common matter in a village market. There is no fixed price of goods. So buyers and sellers bargain to exchange any goods. This makes markets so much noisy. It is an unhealthy place. It has no proper sanitation . As a result cholera, diarhoea, dysentery etc. breaks out here and there. Gambling parties are often seen in a village fair. Sometimes children are lost and it is great anxiety for the parents. It is not clean. There is no public sweeper to clean the rubbish and filth. Besides sometimes haggling leads to quarrel. It is also a place of pickpockets and criminals . The pickpockets gather there.
The village market does great service to the rural people. It is the backbone of the rural economy. It is a part and parcel of the villagers. The development is necessary to improve the village markets. As the village market plays an important role to our economy. So our government should take some necessary steeps to improve the village markets. Village market is also a special branch of our culture. So there should be held more village markets for the prosperity of our culture.
