or, Greed brings downfall
Once a farmer had a goose. It used to lay a golden egg every day. The farmer used to sell them in the market and within a short time he became quite solvent. But his wife was very greedy. She wanted to be very rich overnight. She thought the stomach of the goose would be full of eggs.
If she could get all the eggs at a time, she would be a rich man quickly. So, she told his husband we can get all the eggs at a time cutting the belly of the goose. She proposed her husband. But her husband did not agree with her proposal. In order to satisfy her greed, she cut the belly of the goose. She searched it thoroughly for eggs. But she found that there was no egg there. She became extremely disappointed. She lost the valuable goose forever. She was gradually becoming rich having one egg of gold everyday. But she wanted to be rich quickly. So, instead of becoming rich she became poor. Through this incident she understood that over greediness brought misfortune for him. If she were patient and could shake off her greed, she could have been rich some day.
