*** What is past Tense? How many types of past tense? Give their definitions, Structures and four examples.
Past Tense: Past Tense denotes an action that completed in the past time.
Kinds of Past Tense: There are four types of past tense:
They are:- 1. Past Indefinite Tense.
2. Past Continuous Tense.
3. Past Perfect Tense.
4. Past Perfect Continuous Tense.
Definitions, Structures and four examples are given below:
1. Past Indefinite Tense: Past Indefinite Tense denotes an action that completed in the past or past habit. Structure: Subject + Verb (past form) + object
Examples:
(a) He spent his boyhood in Dhaka.
(b) They did the work.
(c) Karim went to Khulna.
(d) They played football in the field yesterday.
2. Past Continuous Tense: Present continuous Tense is used when an action is continued for some time in the past.
Structure: Subject + was/were+ Verb (ing) + object
Examples:
(a) My brother was coming at that moment.
(b) They were playing cricket in the field at that time.
(c) I was going to the market. (d) The students were making noise.
3. Past perfect Tense: Present perfect Tense is used in the former action between two completed actions of the past. Simple past is used in the latter action.
Structure: Subject + had+ Verb (past participle) + object
Examples:
(a) We had reached the station before the train left.
(b) The train left after we had reached the station.
(c) The patient had died before the doctor came.
(d) The patient died after the doctor had come. 4. Past perfect Continuous Tense: Present perfect Continuous Tense is used for an action which began before a certain point in the past and continued up to that time.
Structure: Subject + had been+ Verb (ing) + object
Examples:
(a) We had been playing before the train started.
(b) Karim had been reading a novel when I went to meet her.
(c) Gazi Sharif had been teaching there for five years.
(d) They had been playing football for two hours.
