Present Tense in details

*** What is present Tense? How many types of present tense? Give their definitions, Structures and five examples of each. 

Present Tense: Present Tense denotes an action that happens in the present time. Kinds of Present Tense: There are five types of present tense: They are:-

  1. Present Indefinite Tense.
  2. Present Continuous Tense.
  3. Present Perfect Tense.
  4. Present Perfect Continuous Tense.
Definitions, Structures and four examples are given below:

1. Present Indefinite Tense: Present Indefinite Tense denotes an action in the present time or habitual truth or eternal truth.

Structure: Subject + Verb (s/es) + object Examples: (a) Water freezes at 00 Centigrade. (b) The sun rises in the east.

(c) Mother reads the Quran every morning.

(d) The earth moves around the sun.

(e) The moon shines at night.

2. Present Continuous Tense: Present continuous Tense is used when an action is continued or going to be continued in near future.

Structure: Subject + am/is/are+ Verb (ing) + object

Examples:

(a) My brother is coming here tomorrow.

(b) They are playing cricket in the field.

(c) I am going to the market.

(d) The students are making noise.

(e) Rahim is reading a book.

3. Present perfect Tense: Present perfect Tense is used when an action has been done but its effects lasts.

Structure: Subject + have/has+ Verb (past participle) + object

Examples:


(a) They have done the work.

(b) We have solved the sum.

(c) Surovi has eaten a mango.

(d) They have played football.

(e) Karim has sung a song.

4. Present perfect Continuous Tense: Present perfect Continuous Tense is used for an action which began at some time in the past and is still continuing.

Structure: Subject + have been/has been+ Verb (ing) + object

Examples: (a) They have been doing the work for seven days.

(b) We have been living in Dhaka since 2009

(c) Karim has been suffering from fever since Monday last.

(d) They have been working hard since 7:30 am

(e) I have been waiting for him for six hours.
