THE GOLDEN TOUCH
OR, EXCESS OF ANYTHING IS BAD
Once upon a time there was a king called Midas. He was very greedy. He was extremely (অত্যন্ত) fond of gold. Although he had a lot of it, he wanted more. He thought if he had the golden touch he would be the happiest man of the world. So, he prayed to God to give him such kind of magic power as things would turn into gold as soon as he touched them. He thought it would make him richer and happier. At length, God granted his prayer. He was blessed with the power of golden touch.
That means, whatever he touched, it would turn into gold. He became very happy and thanked God for granting his prayer. One morning, he got up early in the morning. He started walking in his garden as usual. He touched a white rose in the garden, and saw, it turned into gold. He was amazed. It was really amusing to him. Then, he returned to the palace. He wanted to share this wonderful news with his daughter. But as soon as he touched her, she turned into a solid gold. He became very shocked at this turn. He left her on the ground to make her human again but she continued to be gold and could not move. The king was very sad to see that. He could not bear (সহ্য করা) the pain caused by the loss of his daughter. He understood the fact. Then, He prayed to God to take back the destructive (বিনাশ কারক) blessing. The God granted his prayer. After a few moments, the girl came to life. Then the king became very happy. Immediately (তাৎক্ষনিকভাবে) the wise god took the golden touch away and the girl became human again. The king became very happy getting back his dear daughter. Then he understood his fault and became generous. From this story we came to know that excess of anything is very bad.
