Student’s
failure in English: Its causes
Jamilur Rahman, Mirpur, Dhaka, 11 January: Recently a seminar was
held in Mirpur Bangla College on “Causes of students’ failure in English”.
Teachers and students took part in the seminar. In the seminar it is said that
English is a compulsory subject at secondary and higher secondary level in
Bangladesh but a huge number of students fail in English which is really
shocking. Certainly there are many causes of students’ failure in English in
our country. Last year 26% of students failed in English at HSC level.
Most of the students are not interested
in learning English. They just want to pass the examinations. So, they only memories
some answers and hope to get them common in the exams. This method does not
help them pass the exams. Many students consider English a problem and they do
not try to overcome this problem. They cannot remove the fear of English and
fail in the exams. Susmita, a student of Mirpur Bangla College who appeared in
the HSC exam in 2014 said, “We fail in English due to our phobia in it.” The
textbooks are not revised and designed or written considering the social
condition well. Teachers ae not trained enough to set questions properly. Mr.
Rafiqul Islam, a lecturer of the college said, “We don’t have pedagogical
training to teach our students effectively and comprehensively.” The present
pattern of setting questions discourages the students to learn English.
It is time to think deeply about the
problem. For this National curriculum and Textbook Board can design our
syllabus suitably. They can introduce an appropriate way of learning and
teaching English which will help the students learn English and overcome the
disgrace of failure in English.
