correspondent reporter, 12th July: Bird flu
attacked the village Golmunda in Tongibari Upazila under Munshigonj District.
The flue has attacked at least three thousand chickens. Upazila veterinary
department after examination found and confirmed the presence of bird flue in
local chickens. The examination result was confirmed from Dhaka as well.
Delowar Hossain, a
Union Parshad (UP) member informed that since 4th July chickens
started dyeing sporadically at different houses. This raised alarm among the
villagers and they instantly called the local NGO Worker Mr. Zawad who
immediately informed the matter to the local veterinary department. Mr. Suman,
the district veterinary officer collected samples for examinations. After
confirming the results both from the districts and from Dhaka, authority
decided to kill all the chickens, birds and pigeons of the village. This is the
first bird flue attack in this district. Mohammad Zabbar Ali, the UP chairman
informed that at least six thousand chickens have died in the bird flue in the
last six days. Most of the villagers are very poor. They took credit facilities
form the local NGO and dependent on their livelihood on raising these chickens.
These poor people have become helpless after killing them all. They used to
sell eggs to the market and earn the bread.
Dr. Suman the district
veterinary officer informed us that the area is now safe from bird flue.
Precautionary measures have been taken so that no one can carry chicken into
this are and no one will be allowed to raise chickens within next three months.
The situation is under control now. He further said that the loss value has not
yet been assessed. But the Govt. will pay necessary compensation after
assessing the total loss. The experts believe that the bird flue may have been
spread through migratory birds coming into the area, People are advised not to
be afraid it.
